Any good pizza connoisseur will agree that a good pizza is made from a variety of different components. The most important ones being a pizza dough that is neither too chewy nor too brittle, toppings that don’t skimp on freshness, and of course a proper wood-fired kiln to bring the dough up to a cooked crisp without singeing it. After all, who wants burnt pizza crust, right? (Plus the risk of cancer and all that. Aiyo.) If you’re still ordering from fast food pizza restaurants, then you really need to stop and take a look at these restaurants that serve some of the best wood fire pizzas in the Klang Valley, for that true la dolce vita flavour! Listed in no particular order.

1. Enorme @ PJ Centrestage

It’s all in the name, we would say. If you’re looking for enormous wood fired pizzas, then Enorme located in PJ Centrestage is really the place to be. A relatively fresh establishment that has seen about four years of continued operations, many people who live outside of the PJ neighbourhood may probably not have known about this contender for some of the best wood fired pizzas in Klang Valley.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • While the pizza menu isn’t large by any means, it keeps all the typical Italian hallmarks intact and does them very, very well. Condensed to such favourites as Margherita pizza which is topped with white cheese, fresh basil, mozzarella and fresh tomato paste, as well as the less frequently seen but no less delicious pizza Al Funghi, served with button mushrooms, honey baked ham (yes, this is a non-Halal establishment), mozzarella, and again, bright red tomato paste. But we’re brave enough to claim that whichever way you go, you are promised nothing short of a true indulgence here with their perfectly flat, crisp pizzas. For a serious guilty pleasure, order the pizzas in their XXL size aka Enorme.

2. Sassorosso Italian Restaurant @ Lorong Yap Kwan Seng

But if you’re looking for a seriously authentic, no-expenses-spared kind of pizza experience, then you simply can’t miss out on Sassorosso Italian Restaurant. Located in the very heart of the nation’s capital, Giovanni, the founder of the restaurant, emphasizes on an incredible commitment to bringing a little bit of that Italian sun-soaked charm to Kuala Lumpur. So much so that ingredients used in his cooking are flown in from Italy!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • If we’re seriously adamant on bona fide Italian pizzas, then you’ll be glad to know that the ingredients aren’t the only things being flown in directly from Italy. Even the very kiln oven had been brought in from the homeland and set up outside the restaurant to truly preserve the entire cooking process, guaranteeing nothing short of seriously delicious pizzas worthy of repeated visits. Prices here are understandably a little more expensive, but the quality of the food more than justifies it. Our pick of the lot is without a doubt a simple Gorgonzola pizza topped with cheese and garnished with rocket leaves; deliciously understated!

3. Eatalia @ Telawi

What do you do when you put cuisine and Italy together? Eatalia! Get it? Eat, and Italia? Yeah, we know its corny but you have to admit it is pretty clever. Found in the hip, KL equivalent to New York’s Greenwich Village aka Telawi in Bangsar, Eatalia’s decor is instantly recognisable with the teeny-tiny Vespa scooter parked right out by its storefront, vividly coloured with an accompanying sidecar. And if you somehow miss that, then the mosaic-decorated kiln in the entrance of the restaurant should remind you where Eatalia is.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • While you do have a pretty healthy selection of Italian food to pick from at Eatalia, the prominent display of its wood-fired kiln out front should be all the indication you need to know that they take their pizzas really seriously (the kiln was built by hand by the owner!). So seriously in fact that Eatalia serves a pizza menu that almost spans 24 different varieties. Yes, twenty-four! From Rucola pizza topped with cherry tomatoes, Parmesan and rocket leaves to the more familiar fast food stalwart Hawaiian pizzas. Kids can even try their hand at making pizzas themselves over the weekends!

4. Bello @ Pavilion

For convenience, we don’t think that you can beat Bello’s, a new entrant to the restaurant scene in KL located in the swanky, upmarket lodgings of Pavilion shopping centre. Founded by one of KL’s longest serving Italian chefs aka Federico Michieletto, this contemporary dining setting may reflect the cosmopolitan location the restaurant finds itself in, but the menu stays well grounded to its Italiano roots.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Being the only Italian restaurant in a shopping centre to house a wood-fired oven of its own, Bello churns out some of the best pizzas you can find within the convenient comfort of a shopping centre. Spend a moment when picking out your pizza of choice, as there is quite a vast number to choose from. Some of the more unique choices include the Pizza Anatara, which uses a pumpkin puree as a sauce base instead of your typical tomato. How unique!

5. Nerovivo @ Bukit Ceylon

A post shared by TABLEAPP (@tableapp) on

A part of the Nerogroup of restaurants, Nerovivo comes from a highly established reputation that the group has for fine Italian cuisine. Which means that reliably, their pizzas definitely cut the mustard. Boasting a relatively large dining area that encompasses both an indoors venue and an alfresco area that is best enjoyed during cooler evenings, Nerovivo keeps a steady stream of constant customers. Book ahead, especially for the dinner service!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  •  To truly savour how good the pizzas are here, we definitely recommend having them in their most pared down, basic guise. And pizzas don’t get any more basic than when you have Margherita Pizza. Deceptively simple, crispy-edged pizza bread is topped with rich tomato paste and a variety of savoury cheeses to balance out the flavours. And that’s on top of the smokiness inherent to the dough once it has been cooked in a wood-fired oven, giving that added layer of earthiness to the flavours!

6. Proof Pizza + Wine @ APW Bangsar

Of course, you can’t leave Proof Pizza + Wine at APW Bangsar out of a list about pizzas, when one considers their new-found, but no less well earned reputation for being one of the best chic haunts for a slice of heaven. Appointed with all the modern amenities you would come to expect from a restaurant that is part of APW’s little collection of gastronomic delights, this little haunt has been a favourite for many an Instagram foodie.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Oven fresh pizzas are without a doubt Proof’s biggest draw. The proof is in the pudding as they say, and given how delicious each one is. But without a doubt, if this is your first time visiting Proof Pizza + Wine, then you can’t go wrong trying their signature Umbrian Black Truffle pizza, which is served with you guessed it, visibly generous slices of black truffle. Deeply aromatic with every bite, it’s hard to imagine any better way to spoil your tastebuds rotten with gourmet pizza!
