It is almost a universally accepted truth that nobody can resist the delicious allure of crispy, crackling, tender roast pork belly, or siew yuk as the Chinese call it. Often prepared alongside other meats such as char siew (caramelised pork) and siew kai (roasted chicken) in speciality Chinese roast shops, they’re a popular dish to order come any time of the day. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, we can always find it in our bellies to make room for this meaty morsel. If you’re as much of a siew yuk fan as we are, then keep your eyes peeled for these tantalizing siew yuk places in KL!

While most roast pork places typically only serve what is considered to be the ‘prime-cut’ for roast pork aka the pork belly, Babeloo B.B.Q Roast Pork does you one better by serving an entire roast pig for your delectation. Better still, they operate in a number of different locations, ensuring that you won’t have to look too far to find one Babeloo outlet near you.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • This is one of the few siew yuk outlets that serve you your choice of roast pork. Choose from different cuts that offer different lean-to-fat meat rations, according to your preference.

Located in Pudu, Wong Kee is a heavy hitter among the local siew yuk vendors. Known for its notoriously fussy proprietor, you’ll have to be incredibly patient to have your own taste of Wong Kee’s legendary siew yuk offerings. But if you have the patience and persistence, then you’ll be rewarded with some of the best crispy pork in the city.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Come ahead of the proprietor, who typically arrives at 12.30pm and wait in line. Any later than that and you’ll be stuck with 30-minute queues!
  • If you know you have a thing for siew yuk, then order a larger serving. Single-serving siew yuk here won’t satisfy your cravings by much!

Housed in Hong Seng Kopitiam’s corner shop alongside a myriad of other hawker stalls, Huang Kee is a favourite for those who live around the neighbourhood, especially for aunties who are busy doing their morning shopping at the local wet market and need a place to unwind with their other friends. The siew yuk is sold in limited quantities, so when it’s gone, it’s gone!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • A deliciously cottony, melt-in-your-mouth fatty layer in the siew yuk makes this place especially popular. Not to mention the well-balanced seasoning that goes into the crackling.

By far the most recognisable name on this list, the Village Duck chain of Chinese roasted meat restaurants makes finding good siew yuk a remarkably easy and pain-free task. While not boasting the same sort of storied history that the other restaurants here have, it makes up for it by being the most comfortable and most convenient option.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • While you should definitely order the siew yuk here, don’t forget the namesake roasted duck too, which is served de-boned.
  • The clay pot fried rice that sizzles when served is also an exciting dish to sample! But be sure not to leave the rice to sit in the clay pot for too long, or it will dry out.
