Snoring is a pretty common occurrence for some of us, and for those who have a partner that snores in bed, they have no choice but to put up with it. However, doctors are saying that snoring may inflict psychological abuse on the non-snoring partner as it affects their sleep quality. You know it’s true!
The director of the Sleep Centre for Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou said that they did a survey and 60% of the respondents experienced sleep that was disturbed by snoring, China Press reported. He said that there are three main reasons that cause someone to snore, including temporary snoring caused by sleep posture or seasonal allergies, physical problems such as obesity or nose and throat conditions and sleep apnea.
He cited one example, saying that he recently treated a 50-year-old man who snored every night and disturbed his wife’s sleep. His snoring was so loud that it could be heard through closed doors and caused the wife to suffer severe insomnia. Finally, she couldn’t take it any more and asked him to seek medical treatment, where he was diagnosed with sleep apnea.
The doctor said that this affects the relationship between a husband and wife as well, and often, a person who has a snoring partner is three times more likely to experience insomnia than an average person. The chairman of the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine added that this can be assumed as psychological abuse as their sleep is disturbed throughout the night.
He recommends that those with snoring problems seek medical advice as soon as possible as this is bad for health. WebMD says that health risks associated with snoring include higher blood pressure, higher chances of suffering from a heart attack or stroke, chronic headaches and fatigue.
Snoring can be annoying so for your partner in a relationship, so it’s good to discuss how you want to handle this problem especially if it’s disturbing the other person’s sleep patterns!
