22 Earthquakes of Up to 4.3 Magnitude Hit Thailand Along the Myanmar Border in Under 48 Hours

Just yesterday (April 20), The Nation reported that up to 15 earthquakes were felt across Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, and along the Myanmar border in just 24 hours.

The quakes happened between 12:34 AM and 9:46 AM, with most of them centred around Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Myanmar. The strongest one hit at 1:41 AM (Thai time) with a magnitude of 3.3, and its epicentre was in Myanmar at latitude 21.732°N and longitude 96.118°E.

7 earthquakes hit earlier today

According to Thailand’s Meteorological Department, 7 earthquakes hit Mae Hong Son and the Myanmar border early this morning (April 21).

6 of the earthquakes occurred between midnight and 7 AM and were centred in Myanmar, while the other shook Pai District in Mae Hong Son. The strongest one, with a 4.3 magnitude tremor, struck Myanmar at 4:17a AM.

Here’s a summary of the earthquakes that took place during the period:

  • 4:49 AM – A 1.7-magnitude quake hit Myanmar, 2km deep and about 47km southwest of Mueang, Mae Hong Son
  • 4:17 AM – A 4.3-magnitude quake struck Myanmar, 10km deep, around 159km northwest of Khun Yuam, Mae Hong Son
  • 2:11 AM – A 3.2-magnitude quake hit Myanmar, 10km deep, about 360km northwest of Pang Mapha, Mae Hong Son
  • 2:07 AM – A 2.7-magnitude quake was recorded in Pai, Mae Hong Son, 5km below the surface
  • 2:02 AM – A 2.7-magnitude quake hit Myanmar, 6km deep, around 81km northwest of Pang Mapha
  • 1:20 AM – A 2.3-magnitude quake occurred in Myanmar, 10km deep, about 54km northwest of Pang Mapha
  • 12:38 AM – A 2.1-magnitude quake was recorded in Myanmar, 10km deep, around 67km northwest of Pang Mapha

One of the quakes went over magnitude 7.0

The Nation also reported that after the massive 8.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Thailand and Myanmar on March 28, the Earthquake Observation Division said there have been 624 aftershocks as of today.

Out of those, 279 were between magnitude 1.0-2.9, 242 were between 3.0-3.9, 86 were between 4.0-4.9, 16 were between 5.0-5.9, and 1 even went over magnitude 7.0.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration provided an update on operations at the collapsed State Audit Office building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, reporting that 103 individuals had been affected by the incident as of Sunday. These included 47 fatalities and 9 injuries.

 

City Hall officials are still searching for another 47 people believed to be trapped under the rubble.
